AWARD RECIPIENTS
John Mattie
John Mattie is a 1975 graduate of Lyman Hall who has had a distinguished career coupled with impact-
ful volunteer work. While at Lyman Hall, he was a National Honor Society member, co-captained the
varsity basketball team, and currently holds the record for the most points scored in men’s basketball
history. John also played for the LHHS baseball team. John graduated summa cum laude from the Uni-
versity of Hartford in 1979, with a BS degree in accounting and has also graduated from the Dartmouth
College Tuck Executive Program.
While raising his two children, Laura and John, with Linda, his wife of 39 years, John Mattie became a
CPA and eventually a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP from 1979 to 2018. Over the years, he
has authored and co-authored several books and publications on not-for-profit industry board gover-
nance, financial reporting, and other business challenges and strategies. John is currently an adjunct
business faculty professor at the University of St. Joseph in West Hartford and an executive in resi-
dence and career advisor at Baruch College in New York City.
John Mattie has provided his expertise as a volunteer over the years, serving as a board member at Long Wharf Theatre, the
Big Brothers/Big Sisters in Wallingford, and the National Academy Foundation. This organization brings together NYC educa-
tion, business, and community leaders to transform the high school experience. John has been a Wallingford Boys and Girls
Club basketball coach, a volunteer reading mentor to elementary students at PS 116 in New York City, a member of the AICPA
Expert Panel and Not-for-Profit Advisory Committee, and a member of the National Association of College and University Busi-
ness Officers earning their Service Award in 2018.
The Wallingford Education Foundation was established in 2003 as a 501 (c) 3 non-profit, community-based partnership supporting
educational innovation and excellence in Wallingford. To date, over $350,000 in grants have been awarded. In addition, it serves as a fund
custodian and shepherd for scholarship endowments. The WEF also has awarded yearly scholarships to Wallingford high school graduates.
It has spearheaded extensive, specifically designated fundraising activities known as Signature Grants when requested in collaboration
with the Wallingford School District.
